ACT Mini Retreat:
Becoming the Ultimate Observer
Presented by Kathryn Bovino, M.A., BCBA, LBA
This mini retreat was designed to help participants cultivate psychological flexibility and deep self-awareness through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The focus was on mindfulness, self-compassion, and perspective-taking, helping individuals shift from reacting to observing their own thoughts and emotions.
Through a blend of experiential exercises, guided meditations, and reflective journaling, attendees explored:
-
Defusion techniques to gain distance from unhelpful thoughts.
-
Mindfulness practices to stay present and grounded.
-
Self-compassion strategies to meet struggles with kindness.
-
Values clarification to align actions with what truly matters.
By deepening their ability to observe rather than react, participants not only gained tools to navigate their own challenges with greater ease but also strengthened their ability to support their clients, families, and loved ones. Developing this observer mindset allowed them to:
-
Approach client interactions with greater empathy and presence.
-
Model psychological flexibility for those they serve.
-
Offer compassionate guidance to clients and families navigating difficulties.
-
Maintain personal well-being while working in high-demand roles.
This retreat provided a restorative and insightful experience, empowering participants to show up more intentionally in their own lives and in their work, fostering resilience in both themselves and those they support.
